Driver's Education - Summer 2026

Huntley Project High School is pleased to offer Driver's Education throughout the school year and during the summer. Although Traffic Education is not a school requirement, it is required by the Montana Motor Vehicle Division for students who wish to obtain their driver's license before age 16. The HPHS Drivers Education program strives to provide teen drivers with a foundation to instill safety, caution, and a basic understanding of driving laws.   Like any other learned skill, driving takes hours and hours of practice. Driver education provides a base of skills and knowledge that students build by practicing with their parents to become proficient drivers. The HPHS Drivers Education Program consists of at least 60 hours of structured learning experiences. At least 6 hours will be spent behind the wheel, and 6 hours will be spent in-car observation of another driver. The driving hours are outside of class time.

Summer Session - June 1, 2026, through June 30th, 2026

All dates are subject to change.

Students must be 14 1/2 years old by June 1, 2026, and currently be in grades 8-12.  Home-schooled students who live in the district are welcome.

Class Times: Monday through Saturday, class is from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. The first week is mandatory. Students are allowed up to 3 hours of classroom absences after the first week, but those absences must be made up at a time scheduled by the instructor. Students who miss more than 3 hours or fail to attend the make-up class will not pass the course.

To register for the Summer Session, students in grades 8-12 will complete the permission form starting April 17th and turn it in to Payton in the central office no later than May 18th, along with the $200.00 fee. (Permission forms and money will not be accepted after May 18th).

The course fee is non-refundable after the first week, which is June 8th.

During the first week of class, students will need a copy of their birth certificate and a Social Security card. I need one parent's signature on the DMV driver's license application. This can be done at the mandatory parent meeting on June 1st, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the high school computer lab.

We are participating in the Cooperative Driving Testing Program with the Montana Department of Justice, Motor Vehicle Division. This program allows me to administer written and driving tests for students. This will also allow your son/daughter to obtain a (TELL), Traffic Education Learner's License (to legally drive with a parent) while enrolled in Traffic Education. YIPPEE, something new these last couple of years regarding the TELL. In the past, students could only drive with a parent or legal guardian, but now, after receiving their TELL, they can drive with anyone 18 or older, with parental permission, of course.

I will give the (DOJ) Department of Justice written rules test twice. Students must score at least 82% on the knowledge test. The first test will be on Monday, June 22nd. If the first is not passed, a second test will be given on Wednesday, June 24th. If both tests are not passed, students will have to take the test in Billings after the Driver's Education Program is over.

Six months from the first day of the Driver's Education Class, students can get their restricted permit, which allows them to drive alone. A pamphlet explaining all the details will be handed out. I will be accepting 20 students for the Summer Session. The first 20 students to turn in their application/permission form and the $200.00 fee will be enrolled. I will inform students on May 19th if they are enrolled.
